Sponsored by John Hope Franklin Center at Duke University, as part of Black History Month:
African-American self-taught artists of the American South: Renderings of their everyday lives
Wednesday, February 13 John Hope Franklin Center, Room 130
12:00 - 1:30 Lunch will be served
Despite their lack of formal training, a handful of African-American self-taught artists from the Southeastern US have emerged as creative powerhouses in the past twenty years, their genius recognized and celebrated by the mainstream art world. Some of their most eloquent renderings depict their everyday lives. In this talk, we will discuss these visual narratives and the ways in which they bear witness to rural farm life, race, work, family, and childhood. We will examine artworks by such artists as Jimmy Lee Sudduth, James Arthur Snipes, Bernice Sims, Mose Tolliver, Eddie Hayes, and MC Jones.
An avid art collector for thirty years, Ginger Young has run a business in Southern self-taught art since 1990 and represents more than 60 artists in her Chapel Hill home gallery. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, she has taught at Duke's Center for Documentary Studies and UNC's Friday Center, and has published articles and letters about self-taught art in Bible Review, Christianity and the Arts, Oxford American, Gallery Notes, and Folk Art Finder. The Art of Jimmy Lee Sudduth, Mose Tolliver, and James Arthur Snipes
Curator: Ginger Young, Ginger Young Gallery
Thursday, October 18 - Friday, November 30, 2007
John Hope Franklin New Media Space
Opening Reception, Thursday October 18, 5:30 - 7:00pm
Sponsored by the John Hope Franklin Center for Interdisciplinary and International Studies, Duke University
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Without benefit of a single art class or conventional supplies, each of these three artists pays rich testament to his life as an African-American male in twentieth-century Alabama. Jimmy Lee Sudduth, who died last month at the age of 97, used a mixture of mud, natural pigments, and paint to capture his town, his family, and the homes where he worked as a gardener. Mose Tolliver, who died in 2006, rendered everyday moments on found wood with lyricism and beauty. James Arthur Snipes delights in portraying his friends and neighbors on tin and framing them with twigs. Each of their works is intensely personal, an enduring visual memoir of everyday life.

| Sep 4, 2007 |
We are deeply saddened to report that self-taught African-American artist Jimmy Lee Sudduth died on September 2, 2007 at the age of 97. Mr. Sudduth died at the Fayette Medical Center in his lifelong hometown of Fayette, Alabama.
Mr. Sudduth was internationally renowned for his inventive and joyful mud paintings on plywood. Born in Caines Ridge, Alabama in 1910, Sudduth first began painting with mud when he was three, and was fond of saying that he could identify 36 different shades of mud around his rural Alabama home. He augmented his mud images with the colors created by grasses, wild berries, and housepaint. His subjects ranged from Southern mansions and cotton picking to self-portraits, his beloved dog Toto (of which there were several), and New York City skyscrapers.
Mr. Sudduth outlived two wives and a son. He had many relatives in the area around Fayette, and would often entertain them and his many admirers with his exuberant harmonica playing and his painting demonstrations. Even after he was in poor health and was no longer painting, he continued to attract a steady stream of fans and admirers with his warmth and wit.
From January 15 through March 27, 2005, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts mounted a major exhibition of paintings by Jimmy Lee Sudduth. A beautiful hardcover companion book to the exhibition, entitled Jimmy Lee Sudduth and edited by Susan Mitchell Crawley, is available at www.amazon.com. Highly recommended!

Thanks to all who joined us for the sixth annual Ginger Young Gallery Spring Art Sale on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1. We raised a grand total of $5350 for Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina!
We were delighted that guest artists Kacey Carneal and Peter Loose were in residence for the benefit weekend. Kacey ran a fantastic painting workshop with 23 kids on Saturday, and Peter dazzled kids and adults alike with his homemade dulcimer concerts. We thank The Barbecue Joint and Pepper's Pizza for their donation of fantastic gourmet pizzas.
If you missed the fun, you can still come out to see the art by appointment. Just email us or give us a call at (919) 932-6003 to set up a time.

Many thanks to all who braved the ravages of the Triangle's December ice storm to join us for our 2002 Holiday Art Sale! We sold some art, enjoyed strong coffee, and even convinced a few visitors still without power to indulge in a hot shower. Ten percent of all sales were donated to the Music Maker Relief Foundation. Please call us at (919) 932-6003 if you were not able to join us for the benefit and want to make an appointment for another time to view the art. We see people by appointment seven days a week. And as always, we offer an impressive inventory: more than 600 paintings, sculptures, garden items, ornaments, and books by 65 Southern folk and self-taught artists. More than eight thousand attendees browsed the vast selection of art and talked with the participating artists and galleries. Don't miss this great event next August! The Women Build Partnership involves women in the construction of Habitat houses. The Orange County, NC Chapter of Habitat has completed 85 homes over the past fifteen years; two of these homes were built by the Women Build Partnership, and the third will be completed this summer.

Howard Finster, one of the world's leading pioneers in the field of folk art, died at age 84 at a hospital in Rome, Georgia, on October 22, 2001. He had created more than 50,000 "sermons in paint" by the time of his death, with his most prominent work being his three-acre Paradise Garden behind his home in Pennville, Georgia. Many of us were first introduced to this amazing field of art by Reverend Finster, and he will be greatly missed.
