Ginger Young Gallery Presents

UPCYCLE:

a holiday sale and celebration of creative reuse!

When:  Saturday, December 3, 10:00 - 6:00

Sunday, December 4, 12:00 - 6:00

Where:  5802 Brisbane Drive, Chapel Hill

Every aspect of this sale, UPCYCLE, will celebrate creative reuse:

* works by self-taught artists from the American South who create beauty from found and salvaged objects;

* Ugandan recycled paper jewelry items from Bead for Life; and

* Haitian metal art crafted from used steel oil drums.

Attendees are also invited to bring their new and gently used children’s books to donate to Book Harvest, which recycles these books by placing them in the hands and homes of local children who need them.

“Upcycling”, a term coined in 1994, means taking an object viewed as waste and turning it into something of greater value.  In this spirit, the artists featured in UPCYCLE rely on old roofing tin, mud, bottlecaps, grocery bags, twigs, road signs, vines, license plates, coffee beans, peanut shells, hinges, keys, old fishing boats, and found wood to render their worlds, their visions, and their imaginations.  Without benefit of a single art class, each of the artists featured in this sale – including Grahame Eggleston, Chris Beck, Leonard Jones, Sybil Gibson, James Arthur Snipes, Ray Polin, and Jimmy Lee Sudduth --  has worked solely with materials readily at hand, many of them discarded, to create unique works of enduring beauty and passion.

Ginger Young has collected and exhibited Southern self-taught art for more than 20 years; currently, her collection comprises over 1,200 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and assemblages by more than 65 Southern self-taught artists.  Her gallery in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is one of the country’s leading collections of Southern folk, outsider, and visionary art, celebrating the creative genius of these self-taught artists.  Ginger also writes about and curates exhibitions of self-taught art.

UPCYCLE runs from 10:00 to 6:00 on Saturday, December 3, and from 12:00 to 6:00 on Sunday, December 4; this event is free and open to the public, and it features hundreds of original items for $5 - $50.  Please note:

  • Anyone who upcycles their new or gently used children’s books by bringing them to donate to Book Harvest will receive $5 off any purchase.  Learn more at www.bookharvestnc.org
  • 100% of bead sales will be donated to Bead for Life.  Learn more at www.beadforlife.org.

May 11, 2010 Final tally: 62 pieces of Haitian art sold at my benefit this weekend, totalling $4396! I will be adding my own donation to that to bring the total amount raised for Hope for Haiti and Art Creation Foundation for Children to more than $5000.

How much will that help? With $2500, Hope for Haiti will be able to operate a nutrition clinic for one month, saving the lives of over 400 children under the age of 5 who are suffering from severe malnutrition. At Art Creation Foundation for Children, $2500 will enable ten children to eat every day for a full year. THANK YOU! Your generosity is changing lives!

Dear friends and fellow art collectors,

Please join me this weekend for a remarkable art experience: I will be exhibiting more than 150 pieces of original folk art from Haiti -- paintings, metal works, voodoo flags, voodoo bottles, gourds, papier mache pieces, and more. These works are vibrant, powerful, and incredibly affordable; they start at just $12, and most are under $100.

The best part: I will donate 100% of all Haitian art sales -- that's right, every penny -- to two grassroots organizations doing amazing work with children in Haiti: Hope for Haiti and Art Creation Foundation for Children.

My gallery walls are also brimming with 1000+ works by Southern self-taught artists including Leonard Jones, Peter Loose, James Arthur Snipes, Cher Shaffer, Woodie Long, MC Jones, and Jimmy Lee Sudduth. Outside, the garden is blooming with Mike Esslinger's bottle trees, birdbaths, and shooting stars. I will also donate 10% of these Southeastern art sales to the two recipient organizations.

What better way to indulge your art passion, or to honor a Mom or a new graduate, than with a piece of original art that also gives back and that expresses the indomitable spirit of Haiti? But even if you can't buy right now, please drop by just to enjoy the art and to feast on delicious pound cake and just-picked strawberries from Mr. Waller's farm. Friends and kids are welcome!

Special thanks to Laurie Carmody Ahner and Galerie Bonheur for making this 2010 sale of Haitian folk art possible. I hope to see you this weekend!

with thanks,

Ginger

African-American self-taught artists of the American South: Renderings of their everyday lives

Wednesday, February 13
John Hope Franklin Center, Room 130
 12:00 - 1:30
Lunch will be served

Despite their lack of formal training, a handful of African-American self-taught artists from the Southeastern US have emerged as creative powerhouses in the past twenty years, their genius recognized and celebrated by the mainstream art world.  Some of their most eloquent renderings depict their everyday lives.  In this talk, we will discuss these visual narratives and the ways in which they bear witness to rural farm life, race, work, family, and childhood.  We will examine artworks by such artists as Jimmy Lee Sudduth, James Arthur Snipes, Bernice Sims, Mose Tolliver, Eddie Hayes, and MC Jones.

An avid art collector for thirty years, Ginger Young has run a business in Southern self-taught art since 1990 and represents more than 60 artists in her Chapel Hill home gallery.  A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, she has taught at Duke's Center for Documentary Studies and UNC's Friday Center, and has published articles and letters about self-taught art in Bible Review, Christianity and the Arts, Oxford American, Gallery Notes, and Folk Art Finder.  To learn more, visit www.gingeryoung.com.

Mud, Twigs, Tin, and Wood:

The Art of Jimmy Lee Sudduth, Mose Tolliver, and James Arthur Snipes

Curator: Ginger Young, Ginger Young Gallery

 Thursday, October 18 - Friday, November 30, 2007

John Hope Franklin New Media Space

Opening Reception, Thursday October 18, 5:30 - 7:00pm

Sponsored by the John Hope Franklin Center for Interdisciplinary and International Studies, Duke University

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Without benefit of a single art class or conventional supplies, each of these three artists pays rich testament to his life as an African-American male in twentieth-century Alabama. Jimmy Lee Sudduth, who died last month at the age of 97, used a mixture of mud, natural pigments, and paint to capture his town, his family, and the homes where he worked as a gardener. Mose Tolliver, who died in 2006, rendered everyday moments on found wood with lyricism and beauty. James Arthur Snipes delights in portraying his friends and neighbors on tin and framing them with twigs. Each of their works is intensely personal, an enduring visual memoir of everyday life.

Sep 4, 2007 We are deeply saddened to report that self-taught African-American artist Jimmy Lee Sudduth died on September 2, 2007 at the age of 97. Mr. Sudduth died at the Fayette Medical Center in his lifelong hometown of Fayette, Alabama.

Mr. Sudduth was internationally renowned for his inventive and joyful mud paintings on plywood. Born in Caines Ridge, Alabama in 1910, Sudduth first began painting with mud when he was three, and was fond of saying that he could identify 36 different shades of mud around his rural Alabama home. He augmented his mud images with the colors created by grasses, wild berries, and housepaint. His subjects ranged from Southern mansions and cotton picking to self-portraits, his beloved dog Toto (of which there were several), and New York City skyscrapers.

Mr. Sudduth outlived two wives and a son. He had many relatives in the area around Fayette, and would often entertain them and his many admirers with his exuberant harmonica playing and his painting demonstrations. Even after he was in poor health and was no longer painting, he continued to attract a steady stream of fans and admirers with his warmth and wit.

From January 15 through March 27, 2005, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts mounted a major exhibition of paintings by Jimmy Lee Sudduth. A beautiful hardcover companion book to the exhibition, entitled Jimmy Lee Sudduth and edited by Susan Mitchell Crawley, is available at www.amazon.com.  Highly recommended!

Feb 20, 2005 The Dial, a new publication that bills itself as "a philosophic art journal," released its premiere issue this month. The topic of this issue is "A Symposium: Towards a Definition of Folk Art." I was honored to author one of the essays exploring this topic.

The Dial is published by the Hurm Museum Press; the Hurn Museum opened in Savannah, Georgia, in the fall of 2004. To learn more about the Hurn Museum, please visit www.hurnmuseum.org.

Oct 25, 2001 Howard Finster, one of the world's leading pioneers in the field of folk art, died at age 84 at a hospital in Rome, Georgia, on October 22, 2001. He had created more than 50,000 "sermons in paint" by the time of his death, with his most prominent work being his three-acre Paradise Garden behind his home in Pennville, Georgia. Many of us were first introduced to this amazing field of art by Reverend Finster, and he will be greatly missed.
