Henry Ray Clark |
|
Texas artist Henry Ray Clark was born in 1936 and first spent time behind bars when he was 15. He was in and out of prison many times in his life for convictions that included attempted murder and drug involvement; his last jail sentence was 25 years, following his fourth conviction on drug charges. His street name was "The Magnificent Pretty Boy". Clark only seemed to create art when in jail, filling manila envelopes, prison requisition forms, and whatever else he could get his hands on with complex geometric designs bursting with color. He said that "as long as my mind can create something beautiful to look at, I am a free man." Tragically, after a period of freedom from prison, Clark was shot and killed by intruders who broke into his home in 2006.
